  • Begin to know multiplication facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times-tables
  • Add or subtract mentally a one-digit number or a multiple of 10 to or from any two-digit number
  • Use practical and informal written methods to add and subtract two-digit numbers
  • Describe patterns and relationships involving numbers or shapes, make predictions and test these with examples

  • Solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division beginning to use measures and pounds and pence
  • Measure and draw lines to the nearest cm

Instructions

Explanations

Fiction

Stories with familiar settings

Stories with predictable and patterned language

Stories to help us understand the lives of others in our world –  our Global Issues focus is on Refugees.

Please continue to hear your child read regularly. All your support in this area is very much valued and appreciated.

History  The topic for this half term is Florence Nightingale and next half term we will study Remembrance Sunday.  Any information that the children can bring in regarding History topics, e.g. family information about World War I, is always interesting and useful and adds to our learning. In our Global Issues focus we will sensitively look at the way wars affect our world even now and learn more through storybooks about the lives of refugees.

Religious Education. Our first topic is Beginnings (creation). Our second topic will be Signs and Symbols (sacrament of Baptism) and our third Visitors (Advent preparations & Christmas scriptures). We will also study Judaism this term (WB 11/11/13).

Design Technology After half term we will be designing and making our own Fridge Magnets.

Science Our first topic is Light & Dark. The second is Sound and Hearing.

Art – ‘Can Buildings Speak?’ We will be looking at shape and line in buildings around us in Sheffield, printing with inks and tiles, sketching and revising colour mixing skills.

P.E. will be on Tuesdays (gym/dance) and Wednesdays (outdoor games- weather permitting). Dance will focus on partner work and response to rhythmic patterns (‘Friends/Bubbles/Shadows’) and Gymnastics on ‘High and Low.’  Outdoor games covers ‘Throwing & Catching’ focussing on collaborative work and small team games. Please provide your child with trainers, shorts, a t-shirt, jogging bottoms and a sweatshirt for outdoor games. As part of Health and Safety Regulations children are asked not to wear jewellery during P.E. Thank – you.

ICT  The children will use ICT across the curriculum. They will be developing their word processing skills through discrete ICT lessons. They will focus on a topic on Finding Information: E – Safety and internet Use during the first half term followed by Sounds and Images in which the children will have the opportunity to explore software and combine media.

Music We will be following the Year 2 Music Express scheme covering a range of skills including rhythm, tempo and duration this term in our topic ‘The Long and the Short of it.’ Work in ICT will complement our activities in Music this term.

PSHE/SEAL  We will be using resources from the  SEAL programme, starting with ‘New Beginnings’, linking the work to the RE topics and Global Issues work.

Finally, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries or concerns.

Yours sincerely,

Ms P Devitt
